Miguel has always had a big heart and a generous spirit. At the peak of his career in Oshawa, ON, Miguel set aside a weekend to give as many cuts as he could, then donated all the proceeds to cancer. At other times, he donated the proceeds to Sick Kids, Heart and Stroke Foundation, women’s shelters, and food drives, among other charities.
Besides donating proceeds to charitable organizations, Miguel has volunteered at McDonald’s for the Ronald McDonald House, given free haircuts at homeless shelters, volunteered to teach and give live demonstrations at the Art and Technique Hair School, and volunteered for the Apprenticeship Committee with the Ministry of Skills and Development. The Apprenticeship Committee was formed to train student stylists and govern the apprenticeship of the said students in an effort to improve the standards of the industry, by implementing rules and regulations to improve the training standards for students and trainees of hair styling. Ultimately, the program was offered in high schools with course credits.
One of his most memorable involvements in civic action was to offer support and a venue for protests (which he also participated in) led by Oshawa Councillor Louise Parks in 2005 to preserve the historic Rundle House on Simcoe St. N (next door to Miguel’s Grand Salon) by seeking heritage status for it. The house, built around c.1912-1916, had been bought by the local hospital’s board, who wanted to build a McDonald house for cancer patients on the property. After about four years of protests and legal action, the hospital eventually won and the house was demolished to make way for the cancer centre.
With Darling, You Look Fabulous, Miguel will once again be setting aside one weekend each year and donating the proceeds from that weekend to a selected charity on Prince Edward Island.
